If you dial 1-800-GOOG-411 you get information service at no cost.
My guess is that GOOG keeps track of the information you seek and sells it to advertisers, but that's just a guess. GOOG does nothing for nothing. But it is a free service to you now, with unknown costs later.
If you pay for information calls, this is a way to get around that cost.
